Buying a camera, and so can you...

Why I bought a GoPro instead of continuing to use my iPhone or a cheaper camera.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, I have an iPhone. That means my battery is always dying, that means I always have to schedule a battery replacement. That also means I will have to carry bulky chargers with me with, including backup chargers, at all times. In the summertime I just don’t need all that stuff in my pockets. And its too hot to carry a backpack all the time. If I’m on vacation, or if I’m on a trip, I just want to feel free and not burdened with all the extras.

I personally think that way too much money is spent on stuff we just don’t need. You don’t need those accessories, you don’t need those extra shoes, you don’t need those extra clothes, you don’t need the extra sweatshirt when you’re traveling. You don’t need any of it.
If you are going to buy new items, remember that it’s better quality things that last longer, are easy to clean and maintain, have long and comprehensive warranties, and make you feel good using them (and specifically not be a hassle).
My solution was to buy an external camera, small in size, with a good lens, durable, and one in which I could swap the batteries at will without having to perform surgery.
There are plenty of extreme cameras in the market, starting from under $20 on eBay or AliExpress with really high-quality optics (sometimes up to 32 megapixels in strength). But those always seemed to lack a feature I wanted.
There are four main features I had to have - these may be different for you.
  1. Waterproof
  2. Native GPS
  3. Ability to swap the batteries on the go.
  4. Wide angle lens. My phone lens can capture up to 73 degrees. Most extreme cameras have 170 degree lenses.
Perhaps there are others on the market that are cheaper - after all, its all really the same hardware at different price points. Maybe in hindsight the $450 for the camera, not including the accessories or additional batteries were a bit much and unnecessary. But that’s what I found and decided on.

There is no right or wrong answer - they will all take good pictures and I doubt the GoPro takes the best.

Hopefully you’ll have better luck.
Make a decision, any decision, and move forward.

Maybe one day the phone manufacturers will finally realize that the only feature we all really want and need is to be able to swap batteries whenever we want, and not multiple camera lenses or an even larger screen. Those cameras are useless if I have to be chained to wall 3 times a day or yet another backup battery to charge my phone.

Good luck, and happy travels!
